Could You Benefit From Eyelid Surgery?

Eyelid surgery is called blepharoplasty and designed to improve the appearance of the eyelids. The surgery may be applied to the either the upper or lower eyelids. In some cases, patients will have surgery on both the upper and lower eyelids at the same time. The results of the surgery are that the appearance surrounding the eyes has a rejuvenated look and the individual looks more alert and rested.

Impaired Vision?

  • While eyelid surgery is generally considered a cosmetic procedure, there are cases where lose or sagging skin created folds that impair the vision. In these cases, the surgeon can restore the natural contour of one's upper eyelid using the eyelid lift surgery so that vision is no longer impaired.

Upper & Lower Eyelid Surgery

  • Cosmetic use of eyelid surgery can be used to treat several different conditions. Surgery for one's upper eyelids may help to reduce the fatty deposits that give the upper eyelids a puffy look. Lower eyelid surgery can remove the excess skin that leads to fine wrinkles found in one's lower eyelid. In addition, lower eyelid surgery can be used to correct droopiness in these structures that allows the white portion of the eye to show below the colored portion or iris of the eye.
  • Eyelid surgery is normally only performed only on adults. The adult should have healthy facial tissue. The patient should have attainable goals as to what they want to accomplish through the surgery. These goals often determine if the surgery involves only one eyelid or both.

So... Are You a Candidate?

  • Patients will want to ask themselves why they are interested in blepharoplasty. They should be undergoing the surgery because it fits their own desires and not those of someone else. This surgery should not be used to fit someone else's ideal image.
  • Not every person desiring this cosmetic surgery is a good candidate. In order to be a good candidate for eyelid surgery patients should be generally healthy without medical conditions that might impair healing or life threatening illnesses. In addition, patients should be non-smokers or be willing to give up smoking several weeks before the surgery and during the time of recuperation. Patients with serious eye conditions, such as glaucoma, detached retina or dry eye may not be candidates for this type of procedure.
Is General Anesthesia or Sedation Involved?
  • The procedure is performed under general anesthesia or with intravenous sedation. Once the patient is under anesthesia, the doctor will make the incision. The surgeon will plan for any scars to be hidden in the normal fold lines of the eyelid. Once the excess tissue is removed, the doctor may use removable sutures, adhesives or surgical tape to hold the incision together for healing. Initially after surgery, there may be some bruising and swelling surrounding the eye. However as this subsides, the patient will begin to see the results of the procedure.

What about risks with Eyelid Surgery?

  • As with any surgery, eyelid surgery is not without risks. When considering this type of surgery, patients should discuss these risks with the doctor. If the surgeon feels the risks of the surgery outweigh the benefits to the patient, he or she may refuse to provide the procedure.
Eyelid surgery is used for both medical correction and cosmetic purposes. If excess skin in the eyelid is causing vision problems, the surgery can be used to correct the condition. The procedure can also reduce puffiness, wrinkles and sagging eyelids. This procedure is not for everyone. Patients should talk with their surgeon about the benefits as well as the risks of the surgery before proceeding.

Eyelid-Surgery-You-get-what-you-pay-for

There are a lot of poor plastic surgeons out there so it’s not surprising that some people were dissatisfied. A woman I know wanted to save money although she’s pretty affluent. She went to a doctor who charged only $3500 and he made a mess of her eyes. I do not believe in economizing on one’s face. Wearing cheaper underwear is a better strategy. I went to a highly regarded surgeon and I got my money’s worth.

Some years later I confided to a couple of dermatologists that I had had my eyes done. They looked closely and said it was the best job they had ever seen. You get what you pay for. The fees I cited are "all-in", hospital, anesthesiologist, etc.

I had the surgery April 1st in Burbank, CA.

I used local, that HURT. Lidocane injected to numb with a drug cocktail to calm me. Surgery was about an hour. Pain was minimal, second- fourth day swelling was like looking at to tiny balloon animals on my eyelids. I'll include pics of the results and days.

I'm 53 and have had droopy eyelids my whole life, always wanted to do this. It's getting better every day. My eyelids are still a bit numb and did loose a few more eyelashes then normal. I used the frozen peas for swelling on days 2- 3, I used corn niblets cause I'm gonna eat em after for dinner. Slept upright for 2 days then gave up after 2 sleepless nights, I rather swell a bit than not sleep. I covered the eyes for a few days when sleeping with a gauze bandage, just in case I might try to scratch in my sleep.

Day 15 and the left eye is almost perfect, right eye has a bit of scarring , lumpiness in the corner, but it should go away in a while. VERY happy I did this.

Updated on 21 Apr 2011:
The scars are calming down are not visible with open eyes, you can see them when my eyes are closed. Eyelids are still numbish. Still happy. Eyelashes getting full and longer with Latisse.

Updated on 29 Apr 2011:
I finally took some new pics. Still Happy, still have numb eyelids but not as numb. the scar on the right eye has a few issues, but I’m going to go another month and see how it settles. Love seeing my eyelids and wearing eye shadow. Most people at work have forgotten I did it even though I showed up at work for a week with gauze and freaky eyes. I’ve been using the scar silicone stuff you cut for the bumpy parts of the scars. every other night or so while sleeping. My inner corners went thru about 3 days of intense itching, not sure if it was the healing or allergies.

Updated on 16 Sep 2011:
I will add pics, but the numbness went away at 4 months. When eyes are open, you can’t see tell I had anything done, with a 10x mirror when I close my eyes I still see the faint lines. My friend who had hers done 3 years ago, has no scaring. Still worth it. doing a bit of CO2 for lines in Nov. will post pics.

bellevue-eyelid-surgery-feel

I went into Dr. Tarbets office for a facelift. When i was young, I was really pretty but was hard for me to feel it because I suffered with acne until I reached the age of 50 years old and was very self-conscience of myself. No more acne, and suddenly my face and eyes started to droop. Never having the self-confidence I deserved I decided to do something to make me feel better about myself.

My eyes had really taken a toll and Dr. Tarbet suggested to at least do the eyes if nothing else. She did an excellent job and I love my new look. My eyes look like they did when I was 24 years old!!! Trust me if you want a good eyelift, she would do a good job. She accepts insurance too, because it is one of her specialties.Updated on 21 Dec 2011:I still love the way Dr Tarbet did my eyes, more so after 5 months and much healing. They look so natural and even.

I felt my eye lids looked tired and made me look older. Couldn't wear mascara. It was like I had a hood on my eyes. It was the final peace to the "aging" puzzle.

After my recovery from lipo, fat grafting and the tightening of my arm pits, I decided to add eye lid surgery to the mix. Call me crazy! I was assured that this procedure would be painless and easy. So, I must say it was literally the icing on the cake after I did it.

My eyes went from night to day! No one can quite figure it out. My friends tell me I look well rested or they ask me am I wearing new eye shadow or mascara? …you name it. It's quite amusing actually. Best part, the surgery was so quick and easy, I barely felt any discomfort through out my recovery. 2 weeks post I could barely tell

scottsdale-az-eyelid-surgery-incredible-doctor

I had upper bleph and also lower transconjuctival bleph done. It has only been 16 days post op and I am very happy. My eyes look more alive and open. I have more swelling time ahead of me but everyday gets a little better.

The day after was the hardest, my eyes were almost swollen shut and my tears were tinted red. The first few days are definitely tough (get some audio books!) but once the major swelling goes down, its gets better quick.

I never needed anything stronger than tylenol for pain but I definitely utilized Ambien (your eyes are crazy dry and irritated) and Valium (even though you can prepare yourself, its hard to see your own face like that!).

If I had to do it all over again, I would have done this surgery years ago to fix my heavy lids (they were also not symmetric). I was lucky to have found the best doctor too. He was having some special opening prices when I had my procedures done but I would have picked him regardless. It was worth it and then some!

Updated on 16 May 2011:
Over 5 months post op and have had a few minor modifications to my creases. Healing and swelling is a slow process and my doc didn't want to rush things before I had time to heal further. I need to learn to be patient! Had some scar tissue inside lower lid lasered (OWWW!). Dr. Holden has been great with doing my requested alterations gradually to give me the results I want in a way that is beneficial and healthiest for me(I am a perfectionist!). Lower inside lids still healing possibly. I get a lot of discharge from my eyes still but it is also allergy season. Things are looking good through my "new eyes", I may seek a little lid tightening in the future…btw, he is great with botox and fillers as well! He definetly has more of an artistic eye for it than my past injectors.

Updated on 18 Jun 2011:
6 months post op, lower lids have gotten slightly better as far as discharge production. One thing I did notice, I went out last wknd and drank for the first time in over 6 months. Just had a few drinks but the next day my upper lids were really puffy and stayed that way all day :( luckily I don't drink much anymore! Going soon to see about tightening lids with some laser resurfacing. I just have this strip of fat above each eyelash line, wish I could get some micro lipo on them or something. We'll see what the dr. says…

Updated on 2 Jul 2011:
Had upper eyelids lasered about 2 weeks ago to tighten some of the skin. They were crazy swollen for 2 days. But when they heal, you you have really delicate fresh baby skin. I love it, wish I could do my whole face! The skin tightens over time from lasering as I understand but it already seems a little better and it seems to have made my eyes look a little more symmetrical. Don't ask me why. The aquaphor I was using to keep them lubriucated started to make them itch and get inflamed the last few days so I stopped using it per Dr's instructions. They are still a little pink but am happy with the choice to laser them.

Updated on 16 Jan 2012:
One year post op and I am happy with my decision to go through with this surgery. My right eye is still a little resistant because it had the most change to it without cutting the epicanthal fold and continues to want to crease below my new crease which is something I hope to get “tucked” in hopefully soon. It is bothersome to me but likely only because I am a perfectionist and I have to look at it all the time. Although my doctor doesn’t think it is necessary, I believe I may need a little tightening further in toward my right epicanthal. My new crease is just a tiny bit too high for the angle of my right eye’s inner corner. I did notice that the skin around my eyes seems persistly dry and slightly flaky so I always need nightly eye creams/moisturizer. Love not having to wear eye makeup though which I never was confident enough to do before my blepharoplasties. I would’ve done this before my breast aug 10 years ago if I had known how much it could change my life! Dr. Holden’s expertise and skills played a major role in my transformation and I will continue to seek graceful aging procedures from him in the future.

Eyelid-Surgery-Total-package-in-Prague

I had upper eyelid surgery in Prague 2 weeks ago and there is still some swelling but both eyes are different. The cuts are at at completely different distances from the lid,the creases are at different heights and I have still got pain in my left eye where the pupil seems to be turning out slightly now. The scar on my right eye is not hidden and goes out right past my eyebrow but my left eye scar is hidden nicely.

Having support from my Doctor and done much research,I eventually choose this clinic as I had seen good reports on many of the forums and as I was travelling alone from UK this package included accommodation and pick up from airport, etc. Going abroad was a big step but cost in the UK was so much more.I was more worried about the TT and thought the eyelid surgery would be straight forward but tummy has healed well but have problems with eyes which are visable and so am disappointed with result.

Don’t know whether to go back to same surgeon for correction.

Updated on Nov 17, 2009:

There has been no change since surgery,I had this performed at same time as mini TT/lipo to flanks and op took 1hr 40min.Was this a rush job?

Eyelid-Surgery-Tired-hooded-eyelid

At first, I feel very tired on my right eyelid when I blink, it is mainly due to my eyebrow muscles being pulled up when I try to blink my eyes, that means they are working at an opposite direction, with frequent blinking, I really felt extremely tired eyestrain on my right eyelid. I have a slight ptotsis at that time too, it’s been almost 2 years till now.

At the first surgery, a senior experienced Aesthetic Eyeplastic surgeoon helps me to tighten the Levator Muscles but a few months later, the result is still the same. Then I have no choice but to go for a 2nd surgery, this time it was performed by a senior Oculoplastics surgeon. She removes some of my eyelid skin and muscles.

Now it is over 6 months, the result was that my eye looks bigger than the other one and the crease was hidden back by the upper eyelid skin. I think the surgeon removed or lifted too much skin on my eyelid platform but she claimed that she did not. After 2 surgeries, my eyelid are still so tired that whenever I blink, I can felt that the muscles in the eyelid and eyebrow moving up.

I really don’t know what to do now, is there any doctor who can give me good advice on what to do now and what happen to my eyelid? I would really appreciate that. Thank you.

Eyelid-Surgery-Swollen-eyes-are-surgery

My experience was ok i have used the surgeon before therefore went back to him and was happy with that. I was asked just before surgery to change my procedure which was a lot of pressure.

It has been almost 3 weeks since my surgery, i had upper eyelid and lower eye surgery.

My cheeks at the top where the surgeon pushed the fat down are still swollen. My eyes look a little hollow, they also look very cat like when i frown, the look of my eye is very differnt to before which was not what i was expecting. Inbetween my eye brow is still swollen and my eyes look tiny. I am also concerned because my upper and lower yes are still numb is this normal.

Advice? I am truely concerned that this procedure was a mistake.

Eyelid-Surgery-Suggestions-and-help-for-revision-surgery

moved to Florida 7 years ago. I was 55 then, and looking somewhat tired, with bags under eyes. I went to my Dr. to improve my appearance and look somewhat younger again.

I have always had pretty eyes, almond in shape and told I looked like Sophia Loren. My upper weren't that bad, but thought the removal of some fat, (never over 3 mil) wouldn't hurt. I remember stating to her the evening of my surgery, “please don't mess up my eyes, they are the window to your soul and my best feature.” She smiled with confidence.

My oldest daughter picked me up from the surgery, and immediately knew something was wrong. My eyes were surely swollen, and bursed, more than any photos she had seen regarding upper and lower eyelid surgery. One week later my eyes were still swollen shut and bruised. The Dr. put me on Steroids and that reduced the effects.

Weeks after the surgery, my eyes would not stay closed entire night during sleep. My daughter again was the one to notice, along with the altered appearance this surgery produced. My eyes were no longer almond, they were round and very wide. I looked like I was scared by something all the time. I have hollow eye sockets now and they still stay open when I sleep.

My entire appearance was changed to a negative effect, and with every visit I made to my Dr.'s office, I heard the same thing, "GIVE IT TIME". It became apparent after the 4-5th visit, she did not know what to do for corrections, nor was she going to admit any error. After conferring with another surgeon, I found out that she cut access tissue from my eyes, leaving a hollow socket. Too much fat was taken out as well, and leaving little skin, or muscle strength, to close eyes for the entire night. I can blink, thank god.

Since my eyes are wide and hollow, it has also changed my facial features. They are also hollowed in appearance, making face longer in appearance and my once high cheek bones adding to my skeleton look. My family back home did not recognize me when they first saw me. Only my voice indicated who I was. I have gone shopping in stores while visiting my hometown, running into old friends as they pass me by. I do not even resemble who I once looked like and too embarrassed and ashamed of what I look like now. I too, have looked in the mirror everyday and have a stranger looking back for the past 7 years.

Although I seek for some reversion type of treatment, they are more expensive than the original, and I could ever afford. I did have my own collagen injected into my upper lid, but only 20% stays while the rest is absorbed, so lasting effect was temporary. I've looked at Strip fat grafting, again the cost is too great and no guarantee this would work. I've heard all the statements, “why was I so vain,” and “I should of left my appearance alone“.

I remember over hearing my son say one day, “it must be hard for mom, she was once so beautiful and let that doctor butcher her face.” I've cried, thought what did I do to deserve this? Woman everyday have surgery done and it leaves a positive effect. I would not recommend this doctor for my dog. She maybe good at some work, but for eye lid surgery she ruined my life, and appearance.

Little can be done legally with elective surgery, and unless your left horribly disfigured, juries don't feel for you, and attorneys even less. I may still go blind one day from my eyes not completely closing at night. I have scratched my cornea during sleep at night, and have had to receive medical treatment for it.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK !!!! Do not assume because a doctor is Board Certified they know what they are doing. These postings are a great source of information. If I had pictures I'd up-load ,so everyone could see my “before and after“. I stopped taking pictures of myself 7 years ago. I rarely go out in public when visiting home. Not that I'll be recognized, but the mental and emotional effects are too difficult to deal with as time goes by, and little hope is left for any correction. Beware, of what this doctor performs on you. There are something’s in life, we may never recover from. For me this is one of them.

Updated on Jul 29, 2009:

The pro's were to improve my appearance. Con's, I did not do my homework. Just because a doctor is board certitfed, does not mean they are up and familar with all procedures. Mine was a very negative experience.

Help and suggestions for revision surgery?
Updated on Jul 23, 2010:
I have searched for revision on first eye lid surgery for 8 years. On June 24th I went to my home town Plastic/Reconstruction Surgeon ,whom I should have gone too originally for this task. Dr. W has been in practice for many years and is a skilled, experienced Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeron. He performed a mid face lift with focus on the upper area of my temples to elonggate my eyes and try tto give back my almond appearance. He used Pearl Grafting in upper eye lids, for volume and also tried to recreate my lid crease that had been totally removed my first unskilled surgeron. It has been over one month and I see some fat absorbing in upper lids, I am still very pleased with outcome, and family can also see a positive change, and softer appearance. I may need additional fat grafting to upper lids which is normal, and expected. I have taken photos to show and hope this of help to others seeking help in this area. I found his costs absolutely resonable and I am pleased with results this far. Very first pic: how my eyes looked before original surgery. Almond and long. Photo 2 is how my eyes looked after eye lid surgery ..Hollwed,empty,doll eyes, with hardness and no lid crease, round and wide. 3 photo is a side veiw of original surgery showing the hollwed eye socket and how I could almost place my finger in socket.Photo 4, day of revisio suregry.Photo 5,after surgery.Next photo showing third day out. Next photo of side, face appears fuller.

Updated on Aug 10, 2010:
Eight years ago I have aggressive upper/lower eye lid surgery. She changed my face and life to a negative for emotional greiving and loss of my genetic indentity. A good plastic surgeon will never change the shape or appearance of your eyes. Only enhaonce them. This is not a skilled or good Plastic Surgeon, and I highly recommend "NO ONE" have this butcher cut on them. She never took responabiltiy for her aggressive and negative outcome, and hurried me through her office so ohter potential patiences could not see her work. She is cold hearted, and shouldn't be allowed to preform surgery until she learns how to do it correctly.

On June 24, 2010. I traveled to my home town of Rockofrd ,Illinois where a skilled and experienced Plastic/Reconstruction Suregon , performed revision upper /lower eye lid surgery. I have extreme hollwed sockets, and sunken eyes from the original surgery performed. Dr. W gave me pearl fat grafting to upper lids, and a mid face life with focus on the temporal vertigal pull to help re-create my onve almond eyes, raped from me by the original doctor. This drastic change made my entire face look gaunt, hollwed and changed my genetic identiy. I no longer looked like my family. Dr. W helped give me my old appearance back and recreate the natural crease that was cut entirely away.leaving skeleton sockets for eyes. She turned me into a freak that for many years mourned the loss of my face and the emotional roller coaster this type of unskilled work can leave the consumer.

They say photos speak 1000 words, and my photos say much today on how I look and feel. Thereis hope out here and never give up. Just be careful whom you choice to do any P.S. and look at there record. If they are a bad P.S. the web will have them on here with compliants. If it had been around for me 9 years ago, I'd of saved myself allot of heartache, money and pain. First photo is how I once appeared before original surgery. Second photo, how I appeared after the first surgery for enhancment of upper/lower eye lid sugery. Many years of sorrow and depression followed.

Eyelid-Surgery-So-glad-I-finally-had-a-lower-lid-blepharoplasty

I had a tremendous amount of fat under my eyes. I always looked so very tired and avoided family photos and such.

After talking with 3 different doctors, I chose one I felt good about and had a lower lid transconjunctival blepharoplaty 4 days ago. I have only moderate swelling and no bruising.

I am very happy with the results so far. I highly recommend researching the process, talking with a few doctors, and checking their license and reviews. Make sure your doctor is an Ocuplastic Surgeon. I would see a plastic surgeon for all other procedures EXCEPT the eys. I would do this again!
